The history of how I became the Fossil Kid.
When I was about 4 and a half I went walking along the beach at Skegness with my parents while taking our two pet dogs for a walk. I remember the sky was clouded over and was a bit cold. I then spotted in the corner of my eye this grey rock all on its own with sand all around it. Out of interest to find out what it was I went and picked it up and it had this really distinct 3 pronged shape to it. I ran over to my parents and asked them what it was and the answer I got from them was it was only a rock. I kept the rock anyway like a souvenir from the beach.
My parents then took me to take the rock to be looked at by an expert that lived near to the beach that had a stunning collection of fossils. The man told me that is was a cretaceous bird foot print from some cliffs in Scotland. After having the fossil identified the man took me around looking at his collection and he was telling me about all the fossils he had collected from the beach that had no source like no cliffs. I remember seeing a wall full of ammonites on the table and hanging from the wall. Then he took me into another room with a golden glow to it. I walked in and saw huge lumps of Amber polished and un polished. It was amazing. This is what triggered my interest in fossils.
The first fossil hunting trip.
When I was 13 my parents came into my bedroom and asked what I thought about going to the dinosaur island "Isle of Wight". I instantly said "I want to go". So in 3 weeks of my parents asking me we were off on a ferry to the Island. The first day we were there I went off to the cliffs near where we were staying. I saw a huge cliff face that was my favourite colour green. I went up to the cliff and pulled out hundreds of shell fossils and brought them back in a white carrier bag to the hotel.
The day after we went on the first trip we then went to Hanover point. The first fossil I had noticed was a huge dinosaur foot cast that was about half the size of me. I looked up and then saw another big foot cast and then another all leading out to see like the dinosaur went for a swim 70 million years ago. After seeing the breath taking view of all those dinosaur foot casts i then turned and faced the cliff looking at the yellow brown faces of the cliffs. I walked over to the cliffs and saw loads of black lumps of Cretaceous wood sticking out the cliff face.
The last day of the trip we went to the dinosaur isle museum and it was one of the most amazing buildings and museums I have ever been to. When you first go into the museum you will see loads of uncoiled ammonites that were pretty huge. We were also ever so lucky to be the first members of public to go into the building as the museum only just opened on the day that we visited. The huge skeleton of an iguanodon on the wall was the main highlight of the visit to the museum. It was huge and then my passion for fossil grew so much more as I really wanted to find a skeleton like the one i saw in the museum.
The Start of Fossils Galore
A year after my first fossil hunt I created my first website called JJ's fossils for sale and trade. After a few years the site had given me a lot of great ideas so I opened a much bigger and better website called Fossils Galore. The site was changing nearly every week that it was online. The website has been such a success I have managed to start a fossil magazine called "Fossils Galore Magazine". The magazine was a huge hit to the site with over 30 subscribers and many one time buyers. The funding from the magazines helped me then create something else that would help the Fossils Galore website grow even more.
The Start of The World Fossil Forum
From the funds that was made from The Fossils Galore Magazine I was then able to make a new website a global fossil forum called World Fossil Forum. The forum has been running for 2 years now and has already got over 700 registered fossil collectors from all over the world on there. The forum has over 15,000 posts.
Newspaper articles on me.
This is my first newspaper article on my fossil collection while I was still in school.
This article was a double page spread on me lately.
This is the article from the reporter that come on a fossil hunt with me.
